Rain expected during Aquino’s inaugural

MANILA, Philippines— It was a good thing President-elect Benigno Aquino III scrapped his inaugural parade. Now, even if some rain is predicted, there will literally be no parade to rain on.

Expect light rains and showers for the inauguration of the country’s new President on Wednesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration said Saturday.

Weather forecaster Robert Sawi said the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is due to migrate northward to the vicinity of Metro Manila by Inauguration Day. The movement of ITCZ is due to the presence of a low-pressure area east of Luzon.

“The expected approach of a low-pressure area will likely cause the ITCZ to move into Luzon and Metro Manila by Tuesday into Wednesday, the inauguration. We advise people going to the inauguration to bring umbrellas just in case,” Sawi said.

He stressed that the rains would be light and passing showers and that no tropical cyclone is expected to form in the country for the next five days.

Currently, the ITCZ is affecting Visayas and Mindanao, bringing some rainshowers and thunderstorms to these regions. Luzon will be partly cloudy to cloudy with some rains in the afternoon and early evening.

Also, Sawi said extreme Northern Luzon will also see rains for the next five days due to the southewesternly windflow, or a weak southwest monsoon (Habagat).

The ITCZ is a region along the equator where trade winds from the northern and southern hemispheres meet, forming an oscillating band of clouds and rain.

A low-pressure area is a potential tropical cyclone.
